Engineering:

Knowledge is best acquired in an immersive work environment . . . a place where academics teach and students practice at the same time using current technology to create future applications. To accomplish this effort, academics will need to have previously acquired a working knowledge of the technology used. The ideal environment would be real business and industry settings.

The discipline of engineering is extremely broad, and encompasses a range of more specialized fields of engineering, each with a more specific emphasis on particular areas of applied science, technology and types of application.

Technology:

Technology can be the knowledge of techniques, processes, etc. or it can be embedded in machines, computers, devices and factories, which can be operated by individuals without detailed knowledge of the workings of such things.

Operation: (MRO - Maintenance, Repair and Operations)

Maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) or maintenance, repair, and overhaul involves fixing any sort of mechanical, plumbing or electrical device should it become out of order or broken (known as repair, unscheduled, or casualty maintenance). It also includes performing routine actions which keep the device in working order (known as scheduled maintenance) or prevent trouble from arising (preventive maintenance).

Standards Organizations:

An example of organizations setting requirements for "standards" which are used by producers of products and services. Business and industry organizations become members of boards and working groups which write the standards that allow products and services to interoperate. This provides customers the opportunity to purchase from many different organizations and build working systems from their components.
